Discover one of Guatemala’s most extraordinary birdwatching destinations at Estación Las Guacamayas, a research and conservation station located in Laguna del Tigre National Park, in the Petén region. This 5-day birding experience combines tropical rainforest trails, river excursions, wetlands, and the ancient Maya landscape of Yaxhá.
Early morning birding walks and boat excursions offer excellent opportunities to search for elusive rainforest birds, colorful macaws, herons, and other species that inhabit this remarkable protected area.

🗓️ Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival & Birding in Antigua 🏛️🐦
Arrive in Antigua Guatemala and check in at your hotel. Enjoy an afternoon birding session in nearby reserves, searching for highland species such as the Pink-headed Warbler and Bushy-crested Jay.
Day 2 – Flight to Flores & Yaxhá Birding ✈️🌿
Take an early morning flight from Guatemala City to Flores. Continue to Yaxhá National Park for birdwatching among tropical forest and ancient Maya ruins. Search for the Black Catbird, Slaty-tailed Trogon, and Bat Falcon, followed by sunset birding from an archaeological viewpoint.
Day 3 – Estación Las Guacamayas & River Birding 🚤🐦
Travel by road and boat to Estación Las Guacamayas. After an introduction to the research station, enjoy an afternoon boat excursion along the San Pedro River, searching for the Agami Heron, Sungrebe, and Boat-billed Heron.
Day 4 – Jungle Birding & Scarlet Macaw 🦜🌳
Start early with a guided walk through tropical rainforest trails, searching for the Scarlet Macaw, Great Curassow, and White-whiskered Puffbird. In the afternoon, explore forest edges and riverbanks for the King Vulture and Laughing Falcon. An optional night walk offers opportunities to look for owls and other nocturnal wildlife.
Day 5 – Final Birding & Return 🐦🚤
Enjoy sunrise birding at key observation points, followed by a final boat excursion along the river. Transfer back to Flores, with an evening flight to Guatemala City or an overnight stay in Flores, depending on your travel arrangements.
