Lake Atitlán is a paradise for birdwatchers, offering a remarkable variety of ecosystems and some of Guatemala’s most rewarding birding opportunities. This 5-day birding experience combines nature reserves, private fincas, cloud forests, and lakeshore habitats around the lake.

Early morning outings provide the best opportunities to find specialized highland birds, while boat trips and lakeside excursions allow us to explore a completely different range of habitats.

🗓️ Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival & Birding in Antigua 🏛️🐦
Arrival in Antigua Guatemala, hotel check-in, and afternoon birding at nearby reserves, targeting species such as the Bushy-crested Jay and Rufous Sabrewing.

Day 2 – Transfer to Lake Atitlán 🚐🌊
Early morning transfer to Lake Atitlán, with birding stops along the way. Afternoon birding in coffee plantations and secondary forests, followed by an overnight stay at a lakeside eco-lodge.

Day 3 – Cloud Forest & Quetzal Search 🌲🐦
Early morning hike through a cloud forest reserve in search of the Resplendent Quetzal. After lunch by the lake, enjoy an afternoon boat trip to additional birding locations.

Day 4 – Highlands & Lakeshore Birding 🏔️🌊
Morning birding in highland forests searching for Pink-headed Warbler and Rufous-collared Robin. Continue to a lakeside reserve for waterbirds, followed by a visit to a local Mayan village and an evening sunset birding session.

Day 5 – Final Birding & Return 🐦🚐
Enjoy sunrise birding along the lake before breakfast and begin the return journey to Guatemala City, with additional birding stops along the way.
