Description: This immersive birdwatching journey takes you through Guatemala’s diverse ecosystems, providing opportunities to observe its most iconic and endemic species. Starting in the colonial city of Antigua Guatemala, you’ll travel through highland cloud forests, Pacific slopes, and tropical lowlands, concluding in Guatemala City. Each day offers exceptional birding experiences, guided by experts who will help you spot and identify key species in breathtaking landscapes.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival & Antigua Birding
- Arrival in Antigua Guatemala and transfer to hotel
- Afternoon birding at Finca El Pilar, searching for hummingbirds, warblers, and the Blue-throated Motmot
- Welcome dinner and tour briefing
Day 2: Tecpán & Ranchitos del Quetzal
- Early transfer to Tecpán for highland birding, targeting the Pink-headed Warbler
- Breakfast at a local lodge
- Continue to Ranchitos del Quetzal to search for the Resplendent Quetzal
- Overnight stay near cloud forest habitat
Day 3: Horned Guan Expedition – Atitlán Highlands
- Pre-dawn hike in search of the elusive Horned Guan and Highland Guan
- Picnic breakfast on the trail
- Afternoon birding around Lake Atitlán, spotting Azure-rumped Tanager and other specialties
- Relax at a scenic lodge overlooking the lake
Day 4: Pacific Slope & Los Tarrales Natural Reserve
- Transfer to Los Tarrales for a full day of birding in varied habitats
- Key species: Azure-rumped Tanager, White-bellied Chachalaca, and Tody Motmot
- Night birding excursion for owls and nightjars
- Overnight at Los Tarrales lodge
Day 5: Monterrico Wetlands & Pacific Coast Birding
- Morning birding in mangroves and coastal wetlands
- Search for Boat-billed Heron, Black Skimmer, and various shorebirds
- Afternoon transfer to Guatemala City
- Farewell dinner and trip recap
Day 6: Departure
- Morning at leisure or optional city birding tour
- Transfer to La Aurora International Airport
